Backing is very dangerous because of the high volume of pedestrians walking behind and beside buses.Due to this extra hazard bus drivers should avoid backing whenever possible.

When backing a bus take extra precautions.

  • First check backing area.
  • Turn on four-way flashers.
  • Use another person to help you back safely when possible.
  • Check mirrors.
  • Use your horn and warning devices to warn others you are backing.
  • Back very slowly and no further than absolutely necessary.
