INSIDE CHECKS
The Examiner will ask you to make certain checks on the inside
of your vehicle. You will check the steering wheel, brake pedal,
clutch pedal, and accelerator pedal.
Examiner Says
When directed, you are to inspect some of the controls of your
vehicle making sure that they are in safe operating condition. Explain
what you are checking for as you check each item. Do you have any
questions? You may begin by checking the steering wheel.
You Will
Tell the Examiner if your vehicle is equipped with power steering.
Examiner Says
Check the steering wheel.
You Will
Check steering wheel by (vehicles with power steering must start
engine to perform check): - Work the steering wheel from left to
right while watching the front tire for free play. Play must be
no more than 10 degrees. (2 inches in a 20 inch steering wheel)
Examiner Says
Now check the brake pedal.
You Will
Operate and check the brake pedal for: - Freedom of movement.
No binding. - Play - pedal does not go to the floor.
Examiner Says
Now check the clutch pedal.
You Will
Operate and check the clutch pedal for: - Freedom of movement.
No binding. - Free play - not less than one inch free play. - Clutch
pedal not going to the floor before disengaging.
Examiner Says
Now check the accelerator pedal.
You Will
Operate and check the accelerator pedal for: - No binding.
BRAKE CHECKS
The Examiner will ask you to make checks of your braking system.
You will need to check only the brakes that apply to your vehicle.
Examiner Says
When directed, perform a test operation of the vehicles braking
system. You dont need to inspect the individual parts, simply test
whether the brakes work properly. You do not need to leave the cab
for this test. Any questions?
Check your hydraulic brakes.
You Will
Operate and check hydraulic brakes by: - Pump the pedal three
times and hold firmly for five seconds. - Check to see if pedal
moves or settles. The pedal should not move.

Check your parking brake.
You Will
Operate and check the parking brake by: - Applying the parking
brake and trying to pull forward; or, - Pulling forward slowly and
applying the parking

Check service brake:
You Will
Operate and check the service brake by: - Pulling forward slowly
and applying the service brake.
Examiner Says
Check trailer brakes.
You Will
Operate and check the trailer brakes by using hand valve (use
trailer air supply valve only when vehicle is not equipped with
hand valve): - Applying trailer brakes and trying to pull forward
or: - Pulling forward slowly and applying trailer brakes.
